Phetchaburi Shines as Culinary Gem at PATA Destination Marketing Forum

1080 612 wttc2

Phetchaburi Shines as Culinary Gem at PATA Destination Marketing Forum - TRAVELINDEXPhetchaburi, Thailand, November 19, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The PATA Destination Marketing Forum 2024 (PDMF 2024), held from November 12-14 at the Dusit Thani Hua Hin in Phetchaburi Province, Thailand, positioned the province as an ideal international conference destination, highlighted its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, and fostered closer collaboration between the province, local stakeholders, and major tourism organisations. This achievement aligns with the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB)’s objective of promoting secondary and tertiary cities as MICE destinations.

The event was organised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in partnership with Phetchaburi Province, TCEB, and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), with the support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Under the theme “Authentic Prosperous Journeys: Nurturing Culture, Culinary Delights, and Community Wisdom,” PDMF 2024 explored the impact of tourism beyond economic growth. The forum spotlighted community-based tourism (CBT) and examined its positive effects on local communities, job creation, cultural preservation, and the collaboration between national and provincial authorities to promote tourism.

“The theme of this year’s forum captures the essence of what meaningful tourism is,” PATA Chair Peter Semone remarked in his welcome speech, during the event’s opening ceremony. “Tourism today must extend beyond mere economic growth to embrace the environmental and sociocultural aspects of tourism, creating a positive ripple effect in the communities that host us. The value of tourism lies not only in the revenue it generates but in its power to create jobs, protect culture, support environmental preservation, and foster a shared economy that lifts all members of a community.” Mr. Semone also extended his sincere appreciation to all partners, commending their invaluable contributions to the event’s success.

Wanpen Mungsri, Deputy Governor, Acting Governor of Phetchaburi Province said, “Under the theme Authentic Prosperous Journeys: Nurturing Culture, Culinary Delights, and Community Wisdom, PATA Destination Marketing Forum focuses on destinations that possess the potential to showcase unique cultural heritage, local culinary strengths, and community-driven local wisdom that can create meaningful travel experiences for participants, foster sustainable prosperity, and promote tourism growth while preserving natural resources and traditional cultural assets. This aligns with global tourism trends that prioritise community involvement, sustainable growth, and eco-friendly practices, as well as addressing climate change. Most importantly, Thailand and the Asia Pacific region will strive toward stable, prosperous, and sustainable growth, leaving no one behind.”

“For this PATA Forum, we are proud to bring to you Phetchaburi province, a gem of the gulf of Thailand offering a fine blend of arts-craft- culture-nature and gastronomy,” said Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President, TCEB. “The mentioned wealth of nature and cultural treasures have attracted TCEB to work with the city since the past several years aimed to make Phetchaburi a MICE-capable destination, being able to turn those high value offerings into competitive unique selling points of MICE destination. With all your support, Phetchaburi and Thailand will help boost MICE value for the benefit of our whole industry and, more importantly, bring local communities into our value chain.”

Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, Deputy Governor for International Marketing Europe America Middle East and Africa, TAT, said “This forum holds special significance, as it brings together some of the brightest minds and most passionate advocates in destination marketing. We’re not here merely to discuss tourism trends; we are here to define them. Our conversations and insights over the coming days will lay the groundwork for nurturing cultural heritage, culinary traditions, and strong community bonds—elements that make each destination not only unique but also resilient.”

Gp. Capt Athikun Kongmee, Director General, DASTA, said “DASTA places importance on the tourism development that generates income to the local, enhances employment opportunities, and improves the sustainability of local livelihoods. The challenges of sustainable tourism development include ensuring that income derived from tourism is distributed to all stakeholders and contributed to the community’s quality of life and well-being. DASTA is proud to be a co-host of PDMF 2024 in organizing the technical tours for authentic destination experiences in Phetchaburi Province, which DASTA’s incorporation with the Province and all relevant sector has driven Phetchaburi Province to become a member city of UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) – City of Gastronomy in 2021.”

On November 13, delegates joined one of three different tour routes arranged by DASTA and its partners, which showcased Phetchaburi’s community-driven tourism. Highlights of the tours included hands-on experiences in cooking local dishes, seasonal salt-making, traditional Thai shadow puppet-making, and visits to iconic landmarks. Delegates were encouraged to post about their experiences on social media as part of the “Phetchaburi in Focus: Social Media Contest,” with winners announced during the conference.

On the following day, attendees participated in conference sessions led by tourism professionals, community leaders, and specialists from diverse fields, including digital marketing, marine biology, culinary arts, and renewable energy. Representing the public sector were organisations such as the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, the National Food Institute (NFI), the Nepal Tourism Board, the Palau Visitors Authority, the Sabah Tourism Board, the Sarawak Tourism Board, and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Representatives from the private sector included e-Tourism Frontiers, Intrepid Travel, OAG, and Thailand.org, to name a few.

Topics discussed include “Community-Driven Sustainability: Building a Future Through Responsible Development”; “Community vs Tourism”; “Embracing Cultural Heritage: A Journey Through Music and Tradition”; “Street Food: Balancing Tradition and Hygiene”; and “Why Legacy Matters for MICE”.

A key highlight of the forum was a series of presentations by Arnon Wongchiang, Instructor, Management Hotel and Lodging, Faculty of Management Science, Silpakorn University, that showcased Phetchaburi’s three flavours. In each session, delegates learned the origins of Phetchaburi’s salt, toddy palm sugar, and lime; their production processes, and their diverse benefits beyond tastes. To further enrich the experience, some of the delegates were invited to taste a Margarita made with these local Phetchaburi ingredients.

The event welcomed over 370 delegates from 26 destinations across Asia Pacific and beyond, including Australia; Bangladesh; Bhutan; Cambodia; China; Chinese Taipei; Gibraltar; Hong Kong (SAR); India; Indonesia; Japan; Lao PDR; Macao, China; Malaysia; Nepal; New Zealand; Oman; Palau; Philippines; Singapore; South Africa; Spain; Sri Lanka; United Kingdom; and USA.

Alain St.Ange Addresses Africa Celebrates 2024

1071 711 wttc2

Alain St.Ange Addresses Africa Celebrates 2024 - TRAVELINDEXAddis Ababa, Ethiopia, November 14, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The 2024 edition of ‘Africa Celebrates’ saw one of its many open sessions move to the Nelson Mandela Plenary Hall of the African Union (AU). One of those selected to address the conference at the African Union (AU) was Alain St.Ange, the respected Tourism Consultant who is regarded as a tourism expert.

After his introduction, which highlighted his long years in the tourism industry that culminated in his appointment as the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine after a spell of also having Culture as one of his portfolios, St.Ange was his country’s nomination for the position of Secretary General (SG) in the 2017 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), and was one of the three Candidates vying to be President of Seychelles in the island’s 2020 Presidential Elections.

Alain St.Ange took the initiative to congratulate H.E. Lexy Mojo-Eyes and his collaborators for staging an event that was bringing Africa together in peace and harmony through the different cultural events and forums organised during its one week of activities.

He also singled Dr Abigail Olagbaye of Nigeria who was staging an event during the last week on November under the SAYARI DUNIA Sustainable Tourism Foundation, of which Alain St.Ange also sits on its Board.

He said that everyone present were part and parcel of Africa’s tourism industry and invited everyone attending “Africa Celebrates 2024” the preliminary sessions of the Africa Tourism Day and Africa Tourism Climate Action Forum (ATCAF) 2024, to come to Nigeria from the 25 to the 28 of November.

Alain St.Ange said that the African continent’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty is being showcased here in “Africa Celebrates 2024”, while we are all addressing the pressing issue of climate change, the challenges facing the tourism industry and how to give our rich culture its rightful place. ‘As we explore the intersection of tourism, inclusion and climate action, we recognize the immense potential of sustainable tourism to drive economic growth, create jobs, and promote cultural exchange. Our focus is on empowering women and youths with green jobs and skills in waste recycling, renewable energy, sustainable transport, sustainable agriculture, creative industries, tourism, and digital skills’ he said.

On sustainable Tourism Alain St.Ange turned his attention to the delegation of the youth present. “You, the young leaders of tomorrow, you and us seated here today all have the duty and responsibility to ensure that what we have inherited we work to ensure that we leave it better in a better state that what it was when we had it. Let me take a phrase echoed by the Chairman of the Conference earlier. If we can enjoy a walk in the shade, it is only because someone planted a tree many years ago. That is the example we based ourselves one for the tree planting exercise on the program of activities in the coming Nigeria event. Let us be dedicated to grow more trees and let us join to make the difference. You the youth have all heard the buzz word of sustainable tourism. Yes, this is today the words spelling a better future. But in simpler term just think of where you are clapping your hands with joy. You need both hands to clap. The same is applicable to your tourism development. Their needs to be development for economic growth, but the development must be sustainable if we are to mitigate sea level rise, coastal erosion, and the destruction of our rich flora and fauna. Push your leaders to be true to their words. If they said protect then push them to commit to protect and not destroy” said Alain St.Ange

Vietnam HOME Restaurants Unveil Menus Celebrating Local Cuisine and Culture

900 598 wttc2

Vietnam HOME Restaurants Unveil Menus Celebrating Local Cuisine and Culture - TRAVELINDEXHanoi, Vietnam, November 17, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Situated in Vietnam’s north, centre and south Viet Deli’s three HOME restaurants have launched exquisite menus underpinned by fresh, locally grown produce, paying tribute to the country’s rich agricultural traditions.

Nguyen Gia Thien, the executive chef of Viet Deli, the company behind some of Vietnam’s most popular dining establishments, and chef Nguyen Thanh Tung, the executive chef overseeing HOME Hanoi, HOME Hoi An and HOME Saigon, have crafted the a la carte menus, each of which bring together street food, home-cooked favourites and refined dining dishes.

Highlights from HOME Hanoi’s new menu range from the likes of street food favourites ‘Bun Cha’ (grilled pork and noodles) and ‘Pho’ (noodle soup) to home-style classics such as ‘Than Bo Xao Ngong Toi’ (stir-fried beef with garlic bud’) and refined dishes including ‘Ca Chinh Nuong Rieng Me’ (char-grilled Eel fish with local spices).

Located at 75 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street in a grand, four-story French villa, down a quaint lane that gives way to a private courtyard strung with lanterns, HOME Hanoi’s meticulously maintained villa’s interior is defined by brickwork, timber beams and Vietnamese art.

HOME Hoi An’s new menu brims with local specialties like ‘Cao Lau’ (traditional Hoi An noodles with char-siu pork), ‘Mi Quang’ (traditional Hoi An noodles with prawn and char-siu chicken) and ‘Thit Nong Heo Chien Mam’ (caramelized pork jowl with mam sauce) and refined options such as ‘Cua Sot Ot Hoi An’ (stir-fried crab with Faifoo chili sauce).

At 14 La Hoi Street in Hoi An’s Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Vietnam’s central coast, HOME Hoi An is near many of the town’s famed attractions including its street markets and Thu Bon River. In a villa bathed in a distinctive golden-hue, like most of the Ancient Town, the restaurant’s 19th century-themed interior is adorned with lanterns, vintage photography of Hoi An and more.

‘Hau Nuong Trung Muoi’ (grilled oyster with salted egg), ‘Tom Su Sot Ot So Diep Kho’ (steamed prawn with lotus leaf and hot rock salt), ‘Heo Quay Kho Nuoc Dua’ (glazed pork belly in coconut juice), and ‘Tom Hum Nha Trang Nuong Tieu Xanh’ (grilled Nha Trang lobster with green peppercorn) are among specialties served on HOME Saigon’s new menu.

Nestled in an alley at 216/4 Dien Bien Phu in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 3, HOME Saigon calls an historic French colonial villa home. Once the abode of South Vietnam’s vice president, the storied building’s preserved architecture and tasteful décor are rounded off by a green, shaded courtyard.

“As we welcome diners into our friendly, family homes, offering authentic local dishes to be shared between family and friends, each dish on each of our three new menus embraces the daily bounty of Vietnam’s fertile landscape,” Viet Deli country general manager Nguyen Quoc Hoa said. “From fresh herbs and vegetables from nearby markets and our partnerships with local farmers to sustainably sourced seafood and meats, our new menus have a deep connection to our lands. Every bite at HOME celebrates Vietnam’s rich agricultural traditions and supports local farmers and communities.”

HOME Hanoi and HOME Hoi An are open daily from 11am-2pm for lunch and 5-10pm for dinner. HOME Saigon is open from 11am-10pm. The HOME restaurants have been recognised in the 2024 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards, placing them in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide. Tanah Gajah Takes Picnics Afloat with Boat Ride Experience

Bali, Indonesia, November 15, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / A tranquil lake surrounded by verdant tropical jungle in Ubud is the backdrop for a new leisurely picnic excursion dreamed up by the team at Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana. The romantic experience involves couples taking to the water with a picnic basket in tow to enjoy being rowed around a secluded lake at the heart of Dua Dari, Tanah Gajah’s sister property.

While the surrounding natural landscape provides a peaceful outlook, passengers will feast on an ample spread including artisanal cheese sticks with a hummus dip, a juicy chicken ciabatta sandwich with caramelized onion jam, a selection of local tropical fruit, and homemade granola and fruit yogurt. Couples can toast with a bottle of chilled sparkling wine and refresh with strawberry, lemon and mint infused water. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available upon request.

The one hour experience is IDR 1,250,000 ++ per ride (approximately USD80++). For an additional IDR 1,200,000 ++ (approximately USD80++) a professional photography service can be added. The experience is ideal for two guests.

Dua Dari, also located in Ubud, became the Hadiprana family’s holiday home when their first family retreat Tanah Gajah was reimagined as a resort. Nowadays both properties welcome travelers. At Dua Dari, like Tanah Gajah, the vision of renowned architect and art collector Hendra Hadiprana endures. The late Hadiprana patriarch once said, “The most important thing for me is how to arrange architecture and interior spaces to not only be a place, but also be a work of art.” Here sculptures and artwork collected over Hadiprana’s lifetime adorn the grounds and the thoughtful design blends art, nature and Balinese architecture.

“With this experience we wanted to give our guests a new way to experience the peace and serenity that Bali of old, and Dua Dari in particular, exude,” explained Deasy Swandarini, general manager of Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana. “An intuitive friend once told Hendra Hadiprana that two beautiful angels guarded the land here and the words dua dari means two women or two angels. Our new boat ride gives guests a taste of this angelic setting.”
