Hyatt Completes Sale of Hyatt Regency Orlando for $1.07 Billion

997 592 wttc2

Hyatt Completes Sale of Hyatt Regency Orlando for $1.07 Billion - TRAVELINDEXChicago, United States, August 17, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Hyatt Hotels Corporation today announced that an affiliate of Hyatt has completed the sale of the 1,641-room Hyatt Regency Orlando and adjacent 45 acres of land to affiliates of RIDA Development Corporation and an Ares Management Real Estate fund (“Ares”) for approximately $1.07 billion, while retaining a long-term management agreement under the Hyatt Regency brand. In connection with the transaction, Hyatt retained $265 million of non-controlling preferred equity and provided an additional $50 million of seller financing for the adjacent 45-acre parcel.

The sale of Hyatt Regency Orlando is part of Hyatt’s capital allocation strategy to sell owned hotels and reinvest proceeds in asset-light platforms that accelerate growth, and exceeds Hyatt’s expanded $2 billion asset-disposition commitment announced in 2021. Over a three-year period, Hyatt has now realized $2.6 billion of gross proceeds, net of acquisitions, at a 13.3x multiple.

Hyatt Regency Orlando, the fourth largest Hyatt hotel globally by room count, has 1,641 rooms with 315,000 square feet of flexible event space. The hotel – which welcomes more than one million guests and attendees on average per year – is strategically positioned in the market given its prime location near popular Orlando attractions and direct connection to the Orange County Convention Center, the second largest convention facility in the U.S. The city’s strong tourism industry makes Orlando a key market, and RIDA and Ares intend to invest additional capital in a significant renovation plan that will focus on guestrooms and other amenities to further enhance the guest experience.

Additionally, with significant experience developing large-scale convention properties, RIDA and Ares have entered into a development agreement with Hyatt for a new Grand Hyatt hotel on the 45 acres of land adjacent to Hyatt Regency Orlando. Upon the satisfaction of certain conditions, Hyatt and an affiliate of RIDA and Ares will enter into a long-term management agreement for the hotel.

Mark S. Hoplamazian, president and chief executive officer, Hyatt, said, “The sale of Hyatt Regency Orlando represents the largest single-asset sale in Hyatt history. We are thrilled to be working with RIDA and Ares on this transaction, and in collaboration with these world-class developers, we will continue driving the success of Hyatt Regency Orlando and thoughtfully expand our brand footprint in the most-visited destination in the U.S. with a new Grand Hyatt hotel.”

RIDA and Ares anticipate pursuing necessary approvals and other governmental support over the next several years for the planned Grand Hyatt Orlando, which is expected to have approximately 2,500 rooms and be developed in multiple phases. The development of Grand Hyatt Orlando is positioned to create a combined total of more than 4,000 guestrooms across Hyatt Regency Orlando and Grand Hyatt Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center, further positioning Hyatt strategically in this thriving high-demand market.

Ira Mitzner, President & CEO of RIDA Development Corp., added, “We are extremely pleased to be partnering again with Ares in this historic transaction. We are excited to work with Hyatt to grow and enhance the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) district and create a guest experience unparalleled for both group and leisure customers. We look forward to collaborating on a visionary public-private partnership with the State of Florida, Orange County, the OCCC, and all community stakeholders.”

Andrew Holm, Partner and Ares’ Co-Head of U.S. Real Estate Investments, added, “Hyatt has established Hyatt Regency Orlando as a landmark of its community’s vibrant business and leisure activity, and we are excited to work closely with the Hyatt team and advance our partnership with RIDA to realize the potential of this important location. We look forward to leveraging our extensive investment experience undertaking large-scale, complex projects as we seek to create long-term value in this attractive market.”

Dr. Scott Smith: Thailand’s Trailblazer in Tourism Education

1080 864 wttc2

Dr. Scott Smith: Thailand's Trailblazer in Tourism Education - TRAVELINDEXThe Asia Pacific Institute for Events Management (APIEM) proudly announces a historic milestone in Thailand’s tourism education sector. Dr. Scott Michael Smith, a seasoned lecturer at Assumption University with nearly two decades of experience, has earned the distinction of becoming Thailand’s first APIEM Certified Tourism Educator. This accolade highlights not only Dr. Smith’s dedication to educational excellence but also Assumption University’s commitment to advancing the professional standards of the tourism industry in the region.

APIEM, established in 2016, is the premier professional body for events education in the Asia Pacific. The institute’s mission is to elevate the events and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industries through various initiatives, including:

  • Accreditation of Centers of Excellence: Endorsing institutions that deliver world-class undergraduate events and MICE programs.
  • Certified Event Management Courses: Offering accessible, high-quality education for event professionals.
  • Curriculum Development Consultancy: Assisting institutions in creating internationally recognized events/MICE curricula.
  • Scholarly Contributions: Publishing works such as “International Best Practice in Event Management” to enhance academic discourse.
  • Professional Development: Conducting global training sessions for educators and industry experts.
  • International Conferences: Bringing together academics and practitioners from the events/MICE sectors.

Professor David Hind, President of APIEM, has observed Dr. Smith’s innovative teaching methods firsthand. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Scott Smith to the APIEM community. His commitment to tourism education and his forward-thinking approach set a new benchmark in the industry. Achieving this certification as Thailand’s first is a reflection of his unwavering dedication to academic and professional excellence,” stated Prof. Hind.

Dr. Smith’s work extends beyond traditional classrooms. From organizing events in Thailand’s hill tribes and jungles to pioneering virtual experiences in the Metaverse, he employs cutting-edge tools like the 2030 SDGs Game and platforms such as iStaging to inspire and educate future tourism leaders. His approach is rooted in sustainable practices, aiming to create lasting impacts on the industry.

In addition to this recent certification, Dr. Smith was among the first facilitators in Thailand trained to lead the 2030 SDGs Game. Held in Chiang Mai, the program attracted top talents and was led by internationally renowned facilitators David Nevin and Takeshi Muranaka, co-founder of Imacocollabo. “The 2030 SDGs Game offers a fun, interactive way to explore sustainability, teamwork, and responsibility, making it an excellent tool for both educational and corporate settings,” Dr. Smith explains.

Dr. Smith’s influence is also evident in his research, such as the study “From Concept to Practice: Implementing Sustainable Tourism Development at Anurak Community Lodge in Thailand,” published in the SCOPUS-ranked Journal of Environmental Tourism and Management. This research delves into the integration of responsible tourism practices, combining fieldwork, interviews, and guest feedback to provide valuable insights.

Moreover, Dr. Smith’s work includes impactful presentations and collaborations that emphasize responsible tourism and community well-being. His case study on “Asian Oasis—Mythical Journeys in the Hill Tribe Villages of Northern Thailand” is widely recognized in academic circles, and his collaboration on “Planet Happiness” offers a framework for guiding sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites and beyond.

Beyond academia, Dr. Smith has served as the Director of Young SKAL Bangkok for nearly 20 years, fostering connections between the industry and young professionals. His efforts have created valuable opportunities for the next generation of tourism leaders.

Congratulations to Dr. Scott Michael Smith on this exceptional achievement. His contributions will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of tourism and events education in Thailand and across the Asia Pacific.

Mashatu to Launch Lala Limpopo Sleepout Hide in Botswana

600 383 wttc2

Mashatu in Botswana’s Northern Tuli Game Reserve is currently developing a brand-new luxury overnight photographic experience, the Lala Limpopo Sleepout Hide, due to launch in October.

Created in partnership with concessionaire C4 Photo Safaris, co-founded by professional photographer Shem Compion, the new hide has been subtly sunk into the ground to blend in with the surrounding scenery and will offer photography enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike the opportunity to view wildlife in absolute privacy from dusk till dawn.

The waterhole, previously known and loved by many as Pete’s Pond, has always been a hive of wildlife activity as Mashatu’s many herds of elephants and other animals and birds come down to drink and wallow in the waterhole – which will make for some the most thrilling wildlife encounters imaginable, given that they are at eye level, sometimes as close as a couple of meters away from the window. Innovative, non-intrusive lighting is also being introduced around the waterhole to ensure the best possible conditions for both daytime and nocturnal photography, with sensors to alert you to activity during the night and full control panel, allowing adjustment of the side, front and back lighting, as well as colour temperature and angle.

Equipment wise, photographers should bring everything … from wide angle to ultra-zoom lenses: 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and up to a 500/600 lens. They can expect to be photographing elephants up close with a wide angle. A 400mm will be rewarded with tight images of an elephant trunk spraying water or perhaps a portrait of a leopard. For night and low light photography, the faster the lenses (low f-stop value), the better.

Lala (meaning sleep) Limpopo will be available to book for exclusive use and will sleep up to four photographers or guests at a time.  There is also a small kitchen and lounge/dining area, full bathroom with shower facilities and a separate bedroom for the tour leader, Mashatu ranger or C4 guide who is always available for safety, advice and tips.  There will also be facilities for editing photography between filming and shooting.  There is also a small outdoor courtyard to the rear entrance should guests wish to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors without disturbing the wildlife.

C4 PhotoMashatu’s other underground hide, Matebole, is renowned in photography circles globally, with Greg du Toit’s “Essence of Elephants” portrait winning him Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2013, as  just one example of the numerous  award-winning shots taken there.  Lala Limpopo now raises that benchmark even higher, with this new, “one-of-a kind” sleepout safari suite.

There will be an opening special of 50% running for the months of October and November 2024 for those eagerly awaiting, lenses at the ready. Lala Limpopo, as with the other hides in Mashatu, will then close from December 2024 until the end of February over the rainy season and will reopen from 1 March 2025. The rate for this additional activity will be $450 per person sharing per night or  $650 to book one room. To book the whole hide for exclusive use will cost $1,600.

Lala Limpopo is booked as an additional activity for guests staying at one of Mashatu’s camps including Euphorbia Mashatu, Kolokolo Safari Home, Mashatu Lodge, Tuli Safari Lodge Mashatu, Mashatu Tent Camp and Shalimpo Safari Home.

The dining experience’s savory treats includes spicy prawn salad, Kao Soi croquettes, and ‘Miang Kham’, comprising betel leaf, caramelized filling, dried shrimps, coconut flakes, nuts and herbs. Black sesame scones with Chiang Mai mulberry jam, Thai tea macarons, fruit tartlets and mango ice pops are among the afternoon tea’s sweets.

Inclusive of a selection of fine teas or coffee, afternoon tea is presented in a vintage tea cabinet crafted at Baan Tawai, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage of woodcraft. Situated in Hang Dong District, the village is a community renowned for its wood sculptures. Visitors are encouraged to rummage around its markets and interact with wood carvers whose skills have been handed down the generations.

An intimate fine-dining restaurant serving contemporary Northern Thai dishes accompanied by spectacular vistas, Mai Restaurant and Bar is a visual marvel that lends itself to indulging simple, delectable bites during a catch-up with friends, perhaps before an evening event. Under the stewardship of award-winning executive chef Suksant Chutinthratip (Billy) and sous chef Karn Phojun, the restaurant is focused on its ‘360° Cuisine’ concept designed to minimise waste and carbon emissions. Under the program, the chefs craft dishes using produce from the hotel’s nearby organic gourmet farm partnerships with Seed and Rong Khum, and use every part of each ingredient possible before leftovers are returned to the farm as compost.

The Sukhothai Bangkok’s design team seamlessly blends Thai architecture and landscape design, creating an architectural gem that mirrors the ambiance of a hidden village within a lush garden. Drawing inspiration from Wat Sri Chum, a revered temple, our design integrates elements that capture the temple’s grandeur, offering guests a delightful surprise with every exploration of the hotel grounds.

Concept of the Treatment Rooms

Presidential Hammam: The Presidential Hammam welcomes guests with warm-toned materials, including a traditional wooden Thai door adorned with elegant bronze handles. Luxurious green natural stone finishes on hammam beds evoke serenity and harmony with nature. The two-step recessed ceiling pays homage to Wat Sri Chum, creating a captivating focal point. Terracotta mosaic tiles in the wet zone symbolize the texture of a lotus leaf, enhancing the room’s symbolism and elegance.

Hammam Room: Inspired by Middle Eastern and North African bathing rituals, our Hammam Room offers a bespoke and private experience promoting physical cleansing, relaxation, and well-being.

Treatment Room: Located on the second floor, the treatment rooms embrace a simple and direct representation of Thai architecture. Bright and relaxed, with a ‘Pra-Kon’ wall pattern representing the Thai house, the space exudes contemporary beauty. High ceilings and curved shapes add delicacy and softness, complemented by a jacuzzi tub using green terrazzo and light green mosaic.

Our extensive array of services includes massage therapy, beauty treatments, hammams, yoga, Pilates, meditation classes, personalized nutrition advice, and fitness training. The in-house facilities, such as a salt-water lap pool, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, a state-of-the-art technology facial room, and dedicated spaces for yoga, Pilates, and meditation, further enhance the guest experience.

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Welcomes La Tour d’Argent - TRAVELNEWSHUB.comHanoi, Vietnam, August 9, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi’s modern French fine dining restaurant Le Beaulieu will welcome the legendary 400-year-old Parisian dining establishment La Tour d’Argent for a series of highly exclusive meals in October.

La Tour d’Argent, a national landmark that has stood on the banks of the River Seine since 1582, is a pillar of French gastronomic heritage. Helmed by Executive Chef Yannick Franques, awarded the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (the country’s most prestigious honor for craftsmanship), the Michelin-starred restaurant is renowned for its classic yet contemporary style of French cuisine, along with a remarkable wine cellar that houses more than 300,000 of the finest vintages.

The French epicurean icon will stage a unique culinary takeover at Le Beaulieu from Wednesday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024, offering guests and local diners an extraordinary 8-course dinner menu and 5-course lunch menu that showcase La Tour d’Argent’s celebrated cuisine and Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi’s acclaimed spirit of hospitality.

The exclusive 8-course dinner is priced at VND 5,500,000++ per person (with an optional VND 2,500,000++ for add-on wine pairing). The 5-course lunch is priced at VND 2,800,000++ per person (with an optional VND 1,200,000++ for add-on wine pairing).

From the cutting of duck on the fly to the flambéing of Mademoiselle crepes, this immersive dining experience will transport French savoir-faire and the art of gastronomy from the center of Paris to the heart of Vietnam’s vibrant capital city. One highlight will be “Caneton Frédéric Delair,” a signature dish that pays tribute to Charlie Chaplin, who famously spent his honeymoon at the Metropole Hanoi in 1936. The hotel today has a suite that bears his name.

“With our rich history and that of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, it’s easy to bring this unique experience to life, nourished by this encounter and supported by the expertise of our teams. The beauty and refinement of the setting particularly appealed to us, and echoed that of our Parisian home. It’s a promise for customers of a unique and grandiose experience,” said André Terrail, owner of La Tour d’Argent.

George Koumendakos, the General Manager of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, added: “We are delighted to welcome La Tour d’Argent, a legend of French gastronomy, to our hotel for this singular dining experience, as we continue to elevate Metropole Hanoi’s fine dining to new heights. It is also a truly special way for Sofitel to mark our 60-year Diamond Jubilee this year.”

Le Beaulieu, operating in its current space since 1901, is believed to be the oldest continually operating restaurant in Vietnam. It is renowned for serving modern French cuisine with nods to classical French flavors and an emphasis on seasonality and superior ingredients. While there are some traditional French touches, the presentation is stylish, with well-balanced portions and fresh produce from France, Vietnam and elsewhere. Le Beaulieu was recently listed in the prestigious MICHELIN Guide 2024.

The restaurant’s Chef de Cuisine Charles Degrendele was born and raised in Marseille, France, and has been on a remarkable culinary odyssey from the serene countryside of Provence to Michelin-starred kitchens and the vibrant streets of Tokyo. He even trained at La Tour d’Argent.

Le Beaulieu boasts one of the most extensive wine collections in Hanoi, featuring more than 600 references and 1,600 bottles, including over 100 Grand Cru Classés and wines from leading chateaux, vintners and wineries from France and around the world.

The restaurant and its refined al fresco extension La Terrasse underwent an extensive seven-month refurbishment in 2021-22 that resulted in an elegant and sophisticated new interior that ties together the hotel’s storied past with a contemporary new look that melds the opulent, the classical and the modern in a single scheme.

In May, Le Beaulieu launched a new quarterly dining series, “Rendez-vous,” that brings together Metropole’s award-winning culinary team with some of the best chefs from around the world. The series kicked off with two exclusive dinners with French Chef Arnaud Sauthier, who holds 1 Michelin star for his Maison Dunand in Bangkok.

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has held a Five-Star rating – the top level of recognition – from Forbes Travel Guide for five consecutive years and TOP25 Restaurants news.

The hotel’s historic Heritage Wing, with 103 guest rooms and suites, reopened to guests in December 2023 after being meticulously restored and renovated under a 21-month construction project. The comprehensive reconstruction work was centered on the original wing of the hotel, which was established in 1901 and has played host over the decades to numerous heads of state and royalty, along with world-famous actors, writers, musicians and others.
